The Ames Tribune/The Tribune/The Daily Tribune is the six-day afternoon newspaper for Ames, Iowa and competes directly with the Iowa State Daily.

Its circulation is about 12,500. Wednesday and Saturday are its biggest circulation days.

Like all town papers living in a campus town, the Tribune is widely (if not rightly) derided by the Daily, though several former Daily writers move on to work for the Trib. Part of the hostility result from the Tribune succesfully stopping an attempt by the Daily to have off-campus stands. They complained that they were facing government-subsidized competition (the Daily's advisor is partially paid by the journalism school).

When IRHA was debating the Campus readership program, the Tribune tried to get in on the action. Currently, the Tribune has some free stands on campus locations, such as Maple Hall

The Tribune had its hey-dey back when former Wall Street Journal editor and NBC news president Michael Gartner took over the helm in 1993, transforming a placid daily into a firebreather that utilized public records, conducted investigations, and wrote hard-hitting editorials that earned the paper the ire of Ames and ISU officials (Gartner was fond of saying, `Jischke thinks I'm an asshole, and I think he's an asshole, and perhaps we're both right.'). The Tribune won a Pulitzer in 1997 for Gartner's editorial writing.
