[edit] Protection
The protection on the main page will be far from permanent. I just want to avoid any vandalism during the first few days of school, when hopefully people will see the chalkings and come check it out.--Admin 02:12, 22 Aug 2005 (CDT)
It's protected again because of this.--Admin 00:03, 26 Sep 2005 (CDT)
- Hey, somebody should add Category:Sports and Election to "Explore ISU" when protection is off. Also, an unrelated idea: what if we put the picture of the week on the left half of the page, under current events? It would tighten up the layout a bit. --Fred 22:44, 27 Sep 2005 (CDT)
- Not when I can create a list of history events list long enough. :) Cburnett 13:04, 12 Oct 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Templates?
Is there any place where we could list all the templates like Templates or could the ones for each category be placed in that category maybe? Like I knwo there is one for restraunt info and what not. --Talenos 16:31, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Certainly, but there's always Special pages -> All pages -> choose Templates that will always be up-to-date. A page on templates would be nice to have them sorted by function/purpose. Cburnett 16:42, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Calander
At 2005 i see all this under july
<snip>
But when i go there by clicking july on the main page none of it shows up. How do i fix that G-RAM 12:35, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Fixed. The link in the calendar (@ Template:Current July) had to be changed to [[2005#July|July 2005]]. Cburnett 12:46, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Those brick pillars
West of student death and state gym there's four brick pillars with dates like 1920, 1921, 1922, & 1923 near the top. Any idea what they used to be for?
For context: 1920 is when Stanton died and 26 bells were added to the campanile; 1922 was VEISHEA establishment; and 1912 to 1926 was when Pearson was president. Cburnett 01:04, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
==edit== How do we remove the little edit buttons from the main page, they seem like an aesthetic bain. The front page seems to have stablized to some degree, and you could always just edit the whole page. I think the impact would be minimal then to remove them from this page. G-RAM 02:15, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Either you can disable section editing in your preferences or I can protect the page. Or we drop sections all together. Cburnett 10:50, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- I hope your later suggestion isn't serious. Sections are awesome. --pussykatz 13:44, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Drop sections on the main page only. We could come up with a better design that doesn't need them... Cburnett 13:50, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Daily
What's the copyright policy on materials published in the Daily? (specifically, the webite). Can we embed their pictures in our pages, with proper credits, etc? Can we quote verbatim for something like Quick Es? (also, I would take suggestions on how to organize those links). --pussykatz 13:44, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Well, the daily pays the photographers so I presume that they're either buying unlimited rights or all rights of the pictures. You'd have to ask one of the photographers or someone at the daily the specifics. Either way, they won't be usable without permission from someone.
- Re copying text: again, I assume that submitting something to the daily means you transfer all rights to it so the daily owns them. No different than to copy a harry potter book and post it verbatim online. You can, of course, take quotes from it but you can't copy it all. Cburnett 13:53, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] People's names
What's the policy on naming an article about people? Full name? First and last and no middle? Most widely known version only? (e.g. Uri Sellers's real first name is Harold). Maybe just have a bunch of redirects from the least complete/informal names to the complete legal names? Don't bother because there's search? --pussykatz 18:59, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Common full name. Matt is totally ambiguous (I don't even know WTF that is). Cburnett 22:22, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- We should use full names like Matt Campbell if at all. Reduces ambiguity, and increases uniqueness. As in, Matt Campbell should not be allowed to claim Matt for himself. Vic 15:02, 7 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Picture of the Week
I started a page to find good pictures to rotate through on the main page. See Rofflehaus:Picture of the Week (or RH:POTW) to vote and add your nominations. Cburnett 22:39, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Info box templates
I think we need a few more templates. I've made Template:Basic Info and it seems to work well for most cases, but I think we need specialized Info Boxes. For businesses, for example: open hours, accepted method of payments. It may be nice to have a specialized Info box for ISU offices too, if only for a different look. ISU buildings should have info boxes: years built, main office room#, computer labs, departments housed, etc. Faculty bios: dept, position, courses taught, etc. Now, it's not that I'm too lazy to go ahead and do this, I just want to talk about it first before implementing it. I don't want to have to implement the templates everywhere and then change a bunch of things due to something silly. Suggestions welcome. --pussykatz 14:23, 7 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- I've started an ISU building template Template:Building. As it is now, I think it works well for all buildings except for dorms. --Freddie 00:31, 16 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] specialized boxes
- I love the idea. one thing that we could work on is making quasi-conditional subtemplating based on the arguments passed to the main template. I'm already working on something like that for user pages, but the work is slow-going cause it's convoluted as hell and the examples on mediawiki don't really help.
- I'd put something together as soon as you're ready, changing stuff later isn't that big of a deal because we can always see every page that includes a given template, so we can get them all updated.--daoist 17:57, 8 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Red Links
Fine, I disagree that red links = bad, but so they eventually get articles:
Cburnett 02:45, 9 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- I dont think red links equal bad either. But on the main page? The main page should be a sort of show case to draw people in and feature great content. We want to hide the backwater articles of the wiki until there more fully developed. (but not delete them) G-RAM 02:50, 9 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- That's fine and well intentioned, but the main page were the only links to them. Cburnett 11:41, 9 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Main Page Layout
I switched up the layout of the page a little bit...I think the most useful topics to the average user should be up top. Do new users really give a flip about the administration of RH when they first visit? Do regular users? A lot of that stuff should be in a separate RH "About" page. I'm guessing if people bookmark RH, it's to be able to quickly look up restaurants and professors and the like.agape 09:41, 23 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- Can someone change the current event...maybe to John Garang dying? I would but I couldn't figure out the code agape 18:36, 2 Aug 2005 (CDT)
- Edit Rofflehaus:Current events. There's a purge link at the bottom of the main page.
- While I'm at it, edit Rofflehaus:This month in history to change the list of what happens this month. For the first year, I'm moving each month to Rofflehaus:This month in history/MONTH so it's archived. For example, see Rofflehaus:This month in history/July. Cburnett 18:45, 2 Aug 2005 (CDT)
[edit] White space on Main page
There is a lot of under "Some Rofflehaus Topics" and to the right of the list there. Anyone have any ideas on what to do with it? --G-RAM
- I made it a 1x4 table. Shortens the page as well. Cburnett 12:57, 11 Jul 2005 (CDT)
- looks noice--Admin 21:31, 12 Jul 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Misc.
I'd like to see a page on how this was set up and what all you did Daoist.--Josilot 10:58, 1 Jul 2005 (CDT)
Could this and the Wikipedia ISU page be cross-pollinated? --Turbo 21:27, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)
It might be a good idea to create a classes page where people could write up some basic info about perticular classes, experiences, etc.. --Strongbad 00:06, 8 Jul 2005 (CDT)
Hey, let's go discuss Rofflehaus and the elections. --Fred 01:37, 19 Sep 2005 (CDT)
[edit] Umm..
It's February now. Somebody working on this? Isugi 10:21, 6 February 2006 (CST)
- Knock yourself out. I did the last couple months (not surprisingly). --Freddie 03:08, 8 February 2006 (CST)
- Say wah? I did Jan, half of Dec, Nov, Oct, Sep, Aug, & Jul. So pretty much I count that you did half of Dec. :) I'll do Feb, I just havne't gotten around to it yet. Cburnett 08:46, 8 February 2006 (CST)
- I'd do it, but I'm not a great fact finder. --Isugi 15:31, 8 February 2006 (CST)
- Okay, okay. But I do remember doing a couple. I had December done, but apparently it wasn't good enough. --Freddie 23:43, 8 February 2006 (CST)
