Talk:ISU building categorization proposal

From Rofflehaus

Academic buildings do not necessarily fall within a single college. For example, there are people from at least three or four different units/departments in Molecular Biology, depending on how you count, representing at least two colleges (LAS and Ag) as well as other non-college administrative units (vice provost for institutional research, or some such). The same probably holds true for Science II and Bessey, at least, probably many others.

Easily solved by just putting them in multiple categories. Cburnett 09:32, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)

Here's how I've handled residence halls. Using Maple Hall as an example again, you can see I've been ordering the categories from narrow to broad. In this case, from Maple Hall to ISU buildings. Unless someone's changed a page or two, all of the residence halls should be this way. --Freddie 03:39, 9 Aug 2005 (CDT)

[edit] Large Lecture Halls

Do we want to have an article for each large lecture hall? I was just looking at How to find classrooms and I thought it'd be nice if we had an article on Gilman 1002. It would have basic info on the room and space to tell the pros/cons of the room. For example, in Gerdin 1148, I'd write something about how the seats slightly lean forward making slouching uncomfortable. --Freddie 05:13, 11 Aug 2005 (CDT)

[edit] Original Plan

It is hard to come up with a single category for each ISU Building, so that's why I like the 2-pronged approach.

We put the building into the big "ISU Building" category, and we put it into whatever logical categories it belongs. That way it can be found by people searching for a specific building quickly, and it can be found in the appropriate logical groupings.--daoist 12:22, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)

  • ISU
    • ISU places
      • ISU buildings
        • Residence halls
          • RCA
            • New RCA
              • Maple Hall

Why does the above cat scheme fail as opposed to the other? G-RAM 12:29, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)

[edit] Counter-example

Suppose you're looking for Maple Hall. You know it's an ISU Building, so you go there. It's not there. It's buried several categories deep. So ISU Buildings should contain simply a list of all of the ISU Buildings.

Another problem is that "places" is a nebulous term. It can be bigger than a building (RCA, for instance) and it can be smaller than a building, like the MU Food Court.

That's why I say we use both; we place buildings in the physical category (buildings), and in logical categories (places / subcategories of places)

The downside of my idea is that it will cause a little bit more bookkeeping. However, that bookkeeping only has to happen once; ISU doesn't create that many buildings per year. The benefits of the categorization will be realized every time anyone looks for a building.

The other option is sub-categorize all the buildings and keep ISU buildings. Cburnett 16:40, 5 Jul 2005 (CDT)
I think i am being unclear, but I don't know how to better explain myself. It sounds to me like you're describing exactly what I'm describing; we put Building X into Category:ISU buildings and we put Building X into subcategory X, Y, and Z. --daoist 02:03, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)

[edit] Naming problems

[edit] Library Storage Building or Facility?

This page says it's LSB. Pretty much everywhere else I've seen it's LSB. This page says LSF, and it's about the only place I've seen it refered as such (aside from the lists on RH derived from it, of course). Do we want to stick to one of them? Or we can have LSF redirects to LSB. --pussykatz 01:36, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)

If most use LSB, then article there and redirect LSF -> LSB. Same for Lied. Cburnett 01:38, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)

[edit] The Rec

Same thing happens with Lied. It's Lied Recreation Athletic Facility on FPM page, but it's LRA Center on the official Lied page. --pussykatz 01:37, 6 Jul 2005 (CDT)
