South Hall was the first building built to be used as the president's residence. Built to the southeast of the campanile in 1869, it housed president Adonijah Welch and his family until they moved out in 1879. It was used briefly by the botany and vet med departments until 1880, when it was renovated and renamed for use by the domestic economy department. In 1896 it was renamed again to Music Hall, and served in this capacity until it burned to ground in a fire in 1912.
