The Sahara Connection was officially formed during the summer of 2004. Players Imad and Phil have met before while playing for Ames ex-local band Mechanistry, and have talked about a future collaboration in jazz fusion. After a year of practicing and songwriting, they were ready to look for other permanent members. Imad recalled playing with Dave during the Ames Drum Fest 2003 and being impressed. In mid-September, Imad invited jazz aficionados Danny and Brendon to play live with the band, little did everyone know that they were about to become new members of the band, playing respectively the saxophone and the keyboards. The band is currently an electric quintet that is strongly grounded in jazz but often explores grounds in classical music, world music, funk, rock and blues.
