Royce Hooks (born ?) was kicked off the football team after allegations of his participation in a sordid gangbang were made on February 12, 2002. Though he was eventually acquitted, Coach Dan McCarney refused to allow the disgraced linebacker back on the team.

The charges were especially scandalous for the football team. Hooks, a Jacksonville, FL native, was charged along with fellow linebacker Brent Nash (the charges against Nash were later dropped) with raping Ashley Howard, sister of former Cyclone players Marcel and Aaron Howard.

The alleged assault occured on Saturday, January 26, 2002 at safety JaMaine Billups's residence.

Hooks's trial began in July 2003. Howard testified that she had become extremely drunk and that Hooks and Nash took advantage of her, forcing her to perform oral sex on one while the other penetrated her with his fingers.

Hooks admitted to the acts, saying they were "morally wrong" but that they were consensual. He said Howard did not protest until the fingerbanging made her vagina bleed, and that Howard had offered Hooks oral sex but Hooks turned it down, saying "No, no, I have blood on my hands...We have to get out of here."

The defense called into question Howard's character, with some witnesses saying she was actively looking for sex and that on the day the Daily article came out detailing the allegations, she had made a scene and laughed at the article, and even sung a rap song about oral sex.

In two hours and 13 minutes, the jury returned with a "not guilty" verdict on July 31, 2003.

Hooks threatened to sue the school to get back his football scholarship, with the help of attorney Alfredo Parrish, but did not follow through.
