From Rofflehaus
Robert Jason Gore (February 11, 1982 – April 21, 2005) was the first former/current ISU student to die in Iraq War. He was killed serving as a security officer for United States Department of State when the unarmed helicopter in which he was being transported was shot down by an insurgent Surface-Air-Missile enroute to Tikrit, Iraq.
Gore was born in Vail, Colorado. He graduated from St. Johns/Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, WI. He had been a State ranked wrestler in Wisconsin while attending military school. He was also a licensed pilot, an accomplished skier, and fly fisherman. He lived on Fairchild House in Roberts Hall. He completed his 2001-2002 freshman year in physics before leaving school after being activated with the Iowa National Guard.
He was deployed to Iraq with the US Army 186th Military Police in February 2003 until May 2004. In 2005, he returned to Iraq in the employ of Blackwater USA, a private security group.
His name is ineligible to be listed in Gold Star Hall because he was not serving as an active-duty soldier; he was serving his country as a sergeant on inactive military status contracted to provide security for United States diplomats.
His father is Donald Robert Gore, and lives in Newport Beach, California.
