[edit] History
- In May of 1888 students used crude chemical weapons to fight against those suspected to be in fraternities and secret societies. Reported in Des Moines Register—RIOTING IN AMES "The anti-secret society men of the college met in a mob last night about 11 o'clock in front of the society rooms in chemical and physical hall, determined to break up a joint meeting of three secret societies. There was great excitement. The windows were broken by stones thrown from the crowd, and the cry 'Down with secret men' came from nearly a hundred students. Water was shut off from artificial fountains in the room and cyanogen gas in combination with carbon bisulphide was liberated in the lower halls for the purpose of driving the societies from the room."
[edit] Legality
If a police officer decides that a particular rambunctious crowd is unruly, they may order everyone to disperse. In such case, anyone in the vicinity of the area is required by law to disperse. Spectators should expect to be yelled at, maced, tasered, cuffed, and fined.
Participating in a riot in itself is an aggravated misdemeanor (most serious type of misdemeanor). Violent rioters risk substantial jail time and excessive fines.
[edit] Consequences of
With each riot during VEISHEA, it can be counted on that the school administration will clamp down on the festival's freedom. At one point, VEISHEA was a four-day weekend on-campus alcohol-engorgement fest. By 2004, it was neutered into a family-friendly event with all drinking banned from campus. And of course, as a result of the 2004 riot, the event was canceled in 2005.
Students caught and prosecuted of riot-related crimes are expelled without prejeduce.
[edit] How-to
Experts generally agree that alcohol is generally the starting point for any mass disturbance. After that, an event of monumental importance is needed to turn drunken revelry into a full-fledged apocalyptic riot, such as a basketball game victory or a shutting down of a house party.
