Rice Krispie
From Rofflehaus
Rice Krispie treats were invented in the 1930s by ISU alumnus Mildred Day (Home Ec '28) as a way for a girls' camp to raise funds. So it's only appropriate that Iowa State holds the world record for the world's largest Rice Krispie treat, a 2,480-pound confectionary created in the Friley Hall kitchens during VEISHEA 2001.
On April 19, 2001 a group of over 100 students, faculty, staff and alumni led by Alyssa Armbrecht (FSci/ChemE '02) worked for eight hours in Friley's dining service kitchens to mix the 800-odd pounds of Rice Krispies, 1,460 pounds of marshmallowes and 220 pounds of butter used to create the giant treat and then assemble it in a Plexiglass dish. The final product--which was twelve feet long, six feet wide and two feet deep--was loaded onto a flatbed truck to be weighed at the Physical Plant. It was later featured in that year's VEISHEA parade, and afterwards the gargantuan treat was cut into pieces and sold, with proceeds going to benefit Youth and Shelter Services.
In 2003, mayor Ted Tedesco declared February 21 the Rice Krispies Treat Day. It's not clear if the celebration is recurring or a one-time-thing.
ISU beat Michigan State University. It seems that MSU tries to reclaim it, and other universities had also tried to break the record?
