Professor

A professor is a university teacher. Though, not all who teach at a university are professors.

Teaching assistants are generally not called professors.

Like the military or any other beauracracy, there are ranks.

• Instructor
• Lecturer
• Senior Lecturer
• Assistant professor
• Associate professor
• University professor
• Distinguished professor

There is also professor emeritus, but this is a title for professors whom retire but allowed to keep the title, and their office in the department, as an honor.
