Parks Library

Parks Library is where most of the books are. Virtually every student has to visit this place at least once to take care of the Lib 160 orientation requirement. After that, most students only use it as a gathering place to study. The second and third floors can get noisy on busy nights. The library also rents out private study rooms.
The library's collection and services are nothing to write home about. In 1999, Parks was ranked 76 out of 111 U.S. and Canadian universities 1. In comparison, the University of Iowa ranked 25th. The Parks librarians said ISU's relatively low ranking was because ISU has a central library system, rather than a bunch of branch libraries, and therefore, has a low number of total volumes, one of the main criteria for the ranking.
In 2000, thanks to budget cuts, the library's ranking dropped to 84 2.
As of 1997-1998, Parks had 2,167,294 volumes, added 48,314 volumes, had 22,455 current serials, employed 155 permanent staff and had spent a total of $13.9 million.
There is decent wireless access here for those with ISU NetIDs.
If you are an honors student, you can check out books and not have to return them until the end of the academic year (unless someone else requests the book, then you have to return it within 10 days). Graduate students, Professional & Scientific staff, and Faculty members, also enjoy similar benefits. The maximum number of books that you can check out as an undergrad is 150. Graduate students, P&S staff, and Faculty can have a maximum of 500 books checked out. Despite this, some people had reportedly maxed it out.
Alumni of Iowa State can obtain a Visitor's card for a one-time $4 fee. The card is good for life unless you lose it, then you have to pay $20 for a replacement. Community members can get a Visitor's card for a $10/year fee.
The tiers are rumored to be a place where sex occurs. See: sex in the tiers. Rumored? Maybe among people that never get any. Plenty of sex goes down in the tiers.
