Moonlight Express

Also known as the Drunk Bus (though, don't call it that to the driver), the Moonlight Express is a service of CyRide that runs on Friday and Saturday nights between 10:30PM and 2:30AM when classes are in session. The idea was to reduce occurrences of drunk driving by providing this free and safer alternative, and it has been successful; there has never been a drunk-driving related death in Ames at a time when Moonlight Express has been running.

Moonlight Express runs four regular shuttle routes, as well as operating door-to-door service. Schedules vary, so call 292-1100 to arrange a ride. Be prepared to tell the dispatcher where you are, where you need to go, and how many people will be going with you.

[edit] Shuttles

As of Fall 2006 the four shuttles are:

  • A Shuttle (Akin to Red): Holds a time point (Approx 10 minutes) at Sterling University Plains. Follows Red Route to Lincoln Way, Lincoln way straight to Grand Ave, 6th street to Duff Ave, and Duff to River Birch. Holds a short time point at River Birch (Only a few minutes) then follows Blue route to Lincoln way and Beach, Lincoln Way to South Dakota, South Dakota straight to Mortensen and AMS, then striaght from AMS to Sterling University Plains. Rinse, repeat. Runs every 18 minutes.
  • B/D Campus route (Not a full route, see B and D): 13th street to Fredrickson Court, stopping at the #11 cutout. Stange south to Pammel, Pammel down Cemetery Hill to Hyland, Hyland to West, West (Union Drive) to Lincoln Way. Lincoln Way to Beach, Beach to Wallace, Wallace to Pammel, Pammel to Stange stopping at the Fredrickson shelter.
  • B Shuttle (Akin to Green): Holds a long time point at Ontario and Delaware. Follows Ontario straight across Stange, and then follows the B/D campus route. After the B/D campus route it turns back on 13th west to North Dakota. North Dakota to Toronto, Toronto to Georgia, and back to the Ontario and Delaware cutout. Goes to Ontario/California by request.
  • C shuttle (Akin to Yellow): Holds a long time point at lower Friley. Jogs over on Lincoln way to Hayward south. Follows Hayward to Mortensen, Mortensen to Elwood, Elwood to Airport, Airport to Billy Sunday, pulling a U-turn in the apartment complex. Then Billy Sunday back to Duff, Duff to S16th, S16th to Elwood, Elwood to Mortensen, Mortensen to Hayward, Hayward to Lincoln way. The bus then loops around Lake Laverne back to lower Friley.
  • D shuttle (Akin to Blue): Holds a long time point at Aspen and Stange. Stange to 24th, 24th into #40 Schillitter, following blue through Schilitter and UV. Stange to 13th following the Campus B/D route. After completing campus B/D it follows blue bacl through UV/Schillitter. #40 to 24th, 24th to Stange, Stange to Northwestern Pkwy, Northwestern to R50, R50 to Bloomington, Bloomington to Stange.

Also remember that the Moonlight express doesn't require ID but the regular route does. The 10:10 westbound bus past MWL and RCA isn't Moonlight, it's red. Carry your ID.

Rant: Yes, Moonlight used to be a door-to-door service. No, Moonlight will never be a door-to-door service again. Quit bitching at the driver and start bitching at your GSB representatives.
