Local music venue/bar. Located in the Memorial Union. In operation since 1974, the M-Shop has played host to countless musical acts spanning all genres. Among the artists to grace the basement of the Memorial Union are Muddy Waters, Ben Harper, Pat Metheny, Leo Kottke, Arlo Guthrie, Taj Mahal, Smashing Pumpkins, House Of Large Sizes, My Scarlet Life, Jack Johnson, and The Replacements. And the list just goes on like that. The M-Shop has a capacity of 200, and is a good place to catch a band before it outgrows venues of comparable intimacy.

The Maintenance Shop used to serve sandwiches and such for lunch and was a popular place for profs and students who wanted a change from Dining Service and the food court. Unfortunatly the Shop had to stop operating its deli in April of 2005 due to budget problems. However, the bar is still open, and it doesn't look like there is any danger of the M-Shop closing its doors to music anytime soon.

[edit] Trivia

  • In 1994, the M-Shop won the W.C. Handy Award for Best Blues Club in America.
  • The Smashing Pumpkins, who played at the M-Shop before they were big, were reportedly booed by the crowd.
