Lincoln Highway used to run through Ames, in approximately the same place as Lincoln Way. Lincoln Swing in west Ames is part of the original Lincoln Highway.
The Lincoln Highway stretches from New York, NY to San Francisco, CA, running nearly 3400 miles. It was the first transcontinental roadway devised specifically with cars in mind. Now, it is roughly analogous with U.S. Hwy. 30, which runs along the southern end of Ames.
