The plaque

Many things have been dumped in here, including trash cans, goalposts from the few games that the ISU football team won in the 1980s/1990s, and lamposts.

Home to two swans: Lancelot and Elaine.

There is a tradition saying that if you and a significant other walk around the perimeter of the lake 3 times without saying a word, you are destined to be married.

There's a plaque on the east side of the lake that reads:

THIS LAKE WAS A GIFT IN 1916

TO IOWA STATE COLLEGE

FROM

DR. LAVERNE W. NOYES

ALUMNUS 1872

MANUFACTURER AND PHILANTHROPIST

  • May 25, 1959: Dam was blasted with a dynamite bomb with a homemade detonator (during a riot, apparently?)

[edit] News articles

  • The article, Lake beautifies campus through the years, in the 02/24, 1999 edition of the Iowa State Daily is still unavailable due to a change in the Daily's website and general laziness of Rofflehaus contributors. If you'd like to help fix a broken link like this, check out Template talk:ISUD to find out how. Thank you for your patience. (D: 02/24/1999)
