Kenn McCloud

This is cut and pasted from ISUD (OMG plagiarism!):

When longtime Iowa State Carillonneur Richard VanGrabow retired in 1991, the music department wasn't able to hire a new musician to play the traditional noontime concert due to budget cuts. The Campanile fell silent until one Ames man took it upon himself to find the money for the tradition. In November, 1991, Kenn McCloud, a DJ for KCCQ of Ames, locked himself inside the Campanile and played "Louie Louie" and refused to come out until $10,000 was raised to hire a carillonneur. McCloud, who didn't attend Iowa State and now works for KLYF in Des Moines, raised over $10,000 in five days for the cause. These funds, in combination with funds raised by the Stanton Memorial Carillon Foundation, provided money for the renovation and continuance of the carillon and Campanile.

(Note: according to Carillonneur, the name is von, not van Grabow. Someone needs to research the truth)

(Note: according to this, the exact date is September 19, 1991. That daily article has lots of errors, it seems)

[edit] News articles

  • The article, All along the bell tower - From music to kisses, Campanile exemplifies tradition at Iowa State, in the 04/09, 1997 edition of the Iowa State Daily is still unavailable due to a change in the Daily's website and general laziness of Rofflehaus contributors. If you'd like to help fix a broken link like this, check out Template talk:ISUD to find out how. Thank you for your patience. (D: 04/09/1997)

(Note: okay, this is fucked up. According to this last link (Google cache has it if it doesn't load for you -- it didn't when I found it), the effort raised enough money to hire a guest carillonneur: Marilyn Anderson. According to carillonneur, MA was before von Grabow, not after.)
