Journalism and Mass Communication

As indicated by its name, there are two factions within this college:

Journalism has four different emphasises

  • Magazine and newspaper
  • Electronic media studies (i.e. broadcasting)
  • Visual communication (photo, Web, design)
  • Science communication

Mass Communication is basically advertising.

There are several requirements needed to get into the journalism major:

  • Either having an ACT score of 26 or highter, OR: passing the English Usage Test
  • Three foundation courses:
JL MC 101 - a basic course about media and society
JL MC 116 - how to make a career in JL MC
JL MC 201 - a basic writing and reporting class.

  • Retired professor Tom Emmerson fought a long fight to get JL and MC to be one word, but failed.
