ISC west gate
From Rofflehaus
On the western boundry of Iowa State University stands four brick pillars, two on either side of Union Drive at its intersection with Sheldon Avenue. These served as the west gate for Iowa State College.
Donated by the classes of 1920, 1921, 1922, and 1923, these served as the marker of the western boundry of the college and the main west entry to campus (which it still is today).
Seen in top picture, the inner two pillars stood alone and the outer two had brick abutments with a stone flower pot on each wall. The inner pillars were moved away from the road, presumably when the streetcar tracks were removed, to where they now stand.
Another old photo of the west gate can be seen in the bottom picture.
At some point an actual gate was added on the south side of the road next to the pillars. From observation one can discern that there were two gates, a small one and a large one, which must mean that it was used for parking. Taking into consideration that the old football field was once situated in the lot that this gate opens into we can assume that this was one of, if not the main, gate for parking for football games. The large gate is now gone; only a single hinge remains to give any indication of its past presence. The small gate, however, is still there with an old lock holding it shut and slightly buried.
