[edit] Which Hy-Vee is it?
There are 2 (two) Hy-Vees. And they are both on Lincoln Way. So you can't just say "the one on Lincoln Way". Alright? Are we clear on that? There is the West Ames Hy-Vee over in west Ames, and the Lincoln Center Hy-Vee at the corner of Lincoln Way and Grand. You can get away with calling the Lincoln Center Hy-Vee the East Hy-Vee, if you're certain the person you're talking to knows basic directions.
[edit] Back to our regularly-scheduled review
Generally you don't find the best prices here. Both stores have been known to charge you the wrong prices at the register. Thus it's good to pay attention, because the policy specifically says that you get mischarged items for free.
The prices on West and East Hy-Vee are generally the same, but not always. West Hy-Vee has Tasty Tuesdays, where some items (not necessarily food) may be cheaper than usual. In particular, the all-you-can-eat salad bar is only $3.99 as opposed to the regular $4.99. East Hy-Vee has 1/2 price chicken on Tuesdays as well.
Open 24-hours, the best time to shop is between 3am and 6am, the time when most townies are sleeping and readers of this website are wide-awake.
Per state law, they don't sell alcohol between 2am and 6am on Monday through Saturday, and between 2am and 8am on Sunday, so stock up so you can last those precious hours.
The most notable section of West Hy-Vee is the HealthMarket section. While they may not have the best price on general merchandise, they do have a nice selection of organic and natural food products at a competitive price compared to other places, e.g. Wheatsfield.

[edit] Hy-Vee Dining
Hy-Vee also has a bevy of dining options. A whole bevy. You don't say?
- Hy-Vee Kitchen - a variety of main courses and delicious sides
- Breakfast - the Lincoln Center store has a buffet on the weekend until noon
- Chinese - made fresh as demand requires
- TIP: If it's not looking good, you can always ask the cook to make some new food.
- Sushi also available, but apparently it's not that good
- Pizza Shop - call ahead for pickup
- Deli - lunchmeat and cheese and fresh sandwiches
- Bakery - wide selection of baked goods
- Salad Bar
Hy-Vee will also cater your event, no matter the size. Call each store and ask for their catering coordinator for info.
