[edit] Controversies

  • May 2002 - Racism in the leadership - The Greenlee school underwent major upheaval when the department and associate chairs, John Eighmey and Joel Geske, were stripped of their titles by the Iowa State Provost, after allegations that they were giving short shrift to minority faculty members. President Gregory Geoffroy overturned the provost's move, but the damage had been done and Eighmey and Geske soon resigned, and so did five junior faculty. The problem ended up stemming more from conflicts between junior and senior faculty than racial hostility.
  • Feb 2002 - Racism in the classroom - Professor Tracy Owens-Patton (who later resigned, see controversy above) evicted Jay Gardner out of her class for...well, depends on who you believe. Gardner said he was the only voice going against what he thought were Owens-Patton ultra-PC, anti-white screeds. He said she removed him after he stated statistics from the FBI about minority crime "in the context of a class discussion on, of all things, minority crime." Owens-Patton claims that ISUPD Chief Gene Deisinger told her that Gardner was a member of a white-supremacy group and that she needed to look out for her safety. That, and Gardner was being a disruptive prick in class for railing against a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and being supportive of racial profiling. What is most curious, though, is that Deisinger has said that no such white supremacy groups exist but refuses to deny that he told Owens-Patton to watch her back. President Geoffroy refused to overturn Owens-Patton's decision.
