Gold Star Hall
From Rofflehaus
Gold Star Hall, located just inside the north door of the Memorial Union, stands as a memorial to Iowa Staters who have died serving their country. The stone walls of the hall are carved with the names of those who have been killed in action. Since the MU was built in 1928 (between the two world wars), the majority of the hall (the entire east wall and most of the west wall) is devoted to Iowa Staters who perished in World War I. The remainder of the west wall is devoted to casualties of World War II, and the north wall features the names of those who lost their lives in Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Dim lighting, high ceilings, and stained glass windows complete the memorial, giving the entire room a solemn, reverent feeling. The ghost of Hortense Elizabeth Wind, the only woman listed in Gold Star Hall as a casualty of World War I, is said to haunt the room.

[edit] Hat policy
Since October, 2003, signs are posted suggesting the removal of hats or other headgears before entering the hall. Understandably, the sign of respect intended in this gesture may be in conflict with other cultures/religions. It's safe to say that exceptions can be made under these special circumstances.
[edit] Inscriptions

Inside the north door (by poet John Drinkwater):
For Thee they died Master and Maker, God of Right The Soldier dead are at Thy gate Who kept the spears of honor bright And Freedom's house inviolate.
