  • In February 2002, journalism professor Tracy Owens-Patton kicked graduate student Jay Gardner out of her class for being racially disruptive (see controversies in the Greenlee School). She then supported her decision by claiming that Deisinger told her to “be aware of her personal safety” because DPS suspected Gardner was part of a fledging white supremacist group. However, Deisinger told the Des Moines Register that no such groups exist. At the same time, he has refused to confirm or deny that he warned Owens-Patton about Gardner.
