Free speech zone refers to a specific area on campus where speech and demonstrations are allowed without prior permission.

These zones were created during Martin Jischke's presidency. President Gregory Geoffroy did away with them upon being installed as president in October 2001. Free speech is allowed anywhere, though there are "restrictions." Amplified loudspeakers are not allowed without permission, using building space requires notification (but not permission), and notification is required for large planned gatherigs.

The free-speech zone was in front of Parks Library and the Hub. Most speakers who utilize the free speech zone are religous, and include the God-Socks Guy, various preachers, and the Missionaries to the Preborn, anti-abortionists with grisly posters.

  • The article, Geoffroy proposes expanding campus free speech, in the 10/19, 2001 edition of the Iowa State Daily is still unavailable due to a change in the Daily's website and general laziness of Rofflehaus contributors.
