Building #23

Frederiksen Court (FC) — formerly Hawthorn Court — is a collection of University run apartments north of campus. Named after Charles Frederiksen.

FC consists of 24 buildings. 23 of the buildings are residential buildings with the 24th being the Frederiksen Court Community Center. The residential buildings are grouped in three or four buildings and are named the 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s (30s and 70s have four buildings, the rest have three).

Each building (each is given only a number, not a name) has a sign outside saying which building it is. However, in yet another brilliantly asinine move, the signs are located on the inside of each horseshoe-shaped group of buildings. You can't really see them from the parking lots or streets. Good luck finding that party.

[edit] The name change

About 21 months after being dedicated, Hawthorn Court was officially renamed to Frederiksen Court. Besides happening so early in the complex's life, the naming barely passed the university naming rules, which state that someone cannot have a building named after him/her until 5 years after he/she has left Iowa State. Charles Frederiksen left in 1996.

The renaming required a number of signs and other labels to be changed. Then-Department of Residence Director Randy Alexander said it would be "relatively inexpensive" 1 to do this, though it should be noted, Alexander's legacy is leaving the DOR fiscally worse-off than when he arrived.

The name change seems to be a half finished/given up project in public appearance. The elevators were all engraved with the word Hawthorn. However some elevators are improperly labeled as "Hawthorne" (sic) there has not been any word on when or if the elevators' engravings will be redone. In addition, when the area was renamed the standard signs, black panels with white writing, were replaced with red corrugated plastic and attached with zipties.

The naming was dedicated in April 2002, but for postal service reasons, was not effective until May 15, 2002.

[edit] Trivia

  • Jeffrey Dahmer and his family moved to Ames in 1962, when he was just two years old, so that his parents could go to school at ISU. They lived at the Pammel Court, which is where Frederiksen Court is now located.
  • The 10,000 pieces of furniture were built and installed by convicted criminals through Iowa Prison Industries, a company that outsources works to Iowa inmates.

[edit] User reviews

  • Kate's review: Expensive, small apartments. Only convenient for being near campus - though depending on where your classes are, there could be closer apartments - and being fully furnished. It is nice that they separated the toilet area, shower area, and preparation area, though. Between living with the DoR's apartments and off campus, there's no question: off-campus is the way to go.
  • MrTippet's review: Fully furnished apartments that are expensive but also include cable, internet, phone, gas and electric. Every apartment has its own dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer included. Allow for 9 or 12 month leases so you don't have to worry about summer if you won't be there. Not a bad deal if you don't mind a small room.

[edit] Helpful Hints

  • Yes, we all know you've got a kitten. It meows all day when you're fucking gone. You're not the least bit sneaky, so don't bitch when you get caught and your skank ass gets fined.
  • If your trash doesn't make it all the way into the dumpster, CAs will dig through it to figure out whose it is, so be sure to litter anonymous trash all over the place to thwart those fucks, they'll never know whodoneit until they install security cameras, which will be never.
  • Lightbulbs out? Stop by the office in the community center for a free replacement. Shower curtain growing mold? Too fucking bad, they don't give out free shower curtains anymore. The glory days are over.
  • Have any ideas for improving the community? Contact a representative of the Frederiksen Court Community Council.
