Farwell Tilden Brown (born 1910) was a founder of the Ames Historical Society and proclaimed "Official Historian for the City of Ames" in 1986. He contributed significantly to the Ames Public Library. His family has lived in Ames since his grandfather K. W. Brown and family arrived in Ames in 1866. His other grandparents (the family of George G. Tilden) arrived in town in 1869, and their stories of the town's early years had a lasting effect on Farwell.

After graduating from high school in 1929, Brown attended Oberlin College briefly before returning to Ames to finish his studies at Iowa State College. He graduated in 1934 with a degree in Agricultural Economics, and soon after went to work for his father's insurance business. He worked there for nearly thirty years before leaving to appraise property for the Iowa Highway Commission, where he stayed until his retirement in 1976.
