Downtown (sometimes known as the Business/Main Street District) is an area of Ames that can be considered the historical beginnings of Ames. This area includes the Municipal Building, Main Street (Corner Pocket, Whiskey River, Olde Main Brewing Company, etc.), Ames Public Library, Ames Power Plant and surrounding area.

The area bounded by Duff Avenue to the east; Clark Avenue to the west; 7th Street to the south; and 9th Street to the north is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the "Old Town Historic District" and was listed on January 2, 2004.

The dinkey used to connect ISU campus to downtown.
