According to news stories, on July 9, 2003 Roland resident David Tett (1955- ) walked in front of a car on Morrill Road carrying two international students and began yelling racial slurs at the occupants. He then sprayed the driver with water from a water bottle and walked away. When the driver chased Tett down and confronted him, Tett responded by threatening the man with a pocket knife. DPS officers arrested Tett in front of Curtiss Hall soon after.

The incident was originally treated as a hate crime, but it was later determined that the incident was not racially motivated, and Tett negotiated a plea bargain allowing him to serve probation and complete a community service program in exchange for having the charges against him wiped from his record.
