Dan Rice is an academic adviser and recruitment coordinator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a candidate for the First Ward seat on the City Council in the upcoming election. He has received a number of awards for his advising work, and has served on a number of city government and university commissions in the past, including the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Dan Rice is a third-generation alumnus of Iowa State University. He is married to Penny Rice, director of the Margaret Sloss Women's Center. In his free time, he advises a number of student organizations, including Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

[edit] Issues

Rice's main issues in his City Council race are the "One Community" concept he helped develop as a member of the joint commission on the 2004 VEISHEA riots, and long-term planning for Ames–sticking to the "smart growth" provisions in the city's Land Use Policy Plan, as he puts it.

Rice has long been a vocal opponent of the new Wolford mall, and during his time on the Planning and Zoning Commission spoke against it repeatedly. He has also been quoted as opposing the proposed keg registration ordinance as ineffective, though he believes some action needs to be taken against underage drinking.
