CyRide is Ames's public transportation system.

Using CyRide one can get from just about anywhere in Ames to campus, and back.

As an ISU student you are able to ride the bus for free because of a deal struck between GSB and CyRide. To do this, just show your red ISUCard to the driver as you board the bus.

[edit] Service changes, Summer 2006

  • Red route has been changed to operate on S. Dakota to Lincoln Way instead of along Todd, Abraham, and Lincoln Swing. Bus stops are available at Todd and S. Dakota, Lincoln Way and S. Dakota, and Lincoln Way and Beedle.
  • Free campus stops have come to an end. You need to pay a fare or show proof of fare (pass, ISUCARD) to board the bus at all stops. Circulator routes numbered in the 20s are still free at all stops.
  • As the summer progresses, CyRide buses still using mylar reel destination signs will be switched into electronic destination sign systems. For each route, the front sign will alternately display the final destination, and route color name and direction (e.g. Red West/Ames Middle School). The side sign will constantly display route and direction, unless the final destination is somewhere other than the end of the route.

[edit] Inclement weather

CyRide will run except in the most inclement of weather conditions (the last time CyRide service was halted was 2001, due to snowfall on top of a half-inch of solid ice on everything; the last time before that was ten years earlier). If, for some reason, CyRide is not running, local radio stations will relay the information. If the weather is so severe that CyRide is not running, the University will generally cancel classes for the day.

This does NOT mean, however, that your buses will be running anywhere NEAR on time. During winter storm conditions, it is suggested that you plan at least one trip ahead of your normal time, to make sure you can get to your destination on time. During extreme winter weather conditions where CyRide is still running, transfers between #1 Red, #2 Green, #3 Blue will be automatically guaranteed; all other transfers will not be guaranteed.

[edit] Disabled?

Go for it! All trips of #1 Red, #2 Green, #3 Blue, #5 Yellow, #6 Brown, and #23 VET MED Orange are accessible, as well as certain trips of #4 Gray (S. 16th Orange), #21 Cardinal, #22 Gold, and #23 Orange (ISC Shuttle). These trips are marked in the schedules.

[edit] Lost? Confused?

Ask the driver. They know how to read the bus schedules by heart. They also know where just about anything in the city of Ames is located. A great deal of them are fellow students, so ask away.

You can also call them at 292-1100. The helpful operator can help you plan your trip, when and where to catch which bus, and inform you of any transfer if necessary, etc.

[edit] I'm not an ISU student!

Regular fare on CyRide is one dollar, with discounts available for K-12 students, persons on Medicare and those over 65.

If you have to pay, make sure you have something smaller than a fiver, because the bus driver will not give change. Ticket books and discount passes are available from the University Book Store, City Hall, Hy-Vee and other locations listed on the CyRide fares page,
