Cy is the mascot of the Cyclones and of ISU. The mascot was created in 1954 after Chev Adams "heated the flue" by suggesting that the nickname be changed from Cyclones since it is dificult to make a costume of a whirl of wind. After Adams's suggestion, a contest was held to pick a mascot. The winner of the contest was a cardinal, which was chosen in reference to the school colors: cardinal and gold.

Adams's company, Collegiate Manufacturing, was then called upon to design and build a costume. The result was an 8 foot tall bird that cost $200. The mascot was introduced, unnamed, at Homecoming on October 16, 1954.
