A credit (contrary to its economical meaning) is a unit of classwork. A typical class is worth 3 credits and meets for lecture 1 hour per day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or 1.5 hours per day on Tuesday, Thursday.

  • For lecture, one credit is equivalent to one hour of lecture per week.
  • For labs, two credits are equivalent to one hour of lab work.

The class with the least amount of credits is Lib 160 which is worth 0.5 credits.

The one exception is the "R" credit, which stands for "required." These can be classes like E E 166 that are professional orientation or Engr 101 that are college/departmental orientation. Generally, the work is insufficient to be worth a credit.

[edit] Typical semester

Most undergraduate students take 15 credits and graduate students take 9 credits.

The full-time requirement for undergraduates is 12 credits. As of 2005, ISU charges the same tuition fee for 12 or more credits but most departments require permission to take more than 18 credits. Some students have been known to take 21, 24, or more credits — sufficient to say that that kind of schedule leaves no room for sleep, let alone a social life.

[edit] Technicalities

Since a "1 hour" class is actually 50 minutes long, then 1 credit is equivalent to 50 minutes of lecture. "1.5 hour" classes are actually 75 minutes (1.25 hours) long.
