Class schedule

If you're an incoming freshman, you should've met with your advisor to set up your schedule for your first semester. They'll tell you that scheduling time is hectic and that it makes their lives a living Hell. If you're lucky, that'll be the only time you'll ever have to talk to your advisor. Ever.

Before you do anything, you'll probably need a RAN. It's like your ATM card PIN, except it allows you to register for classes. It changes every semester, so memorizing it is as about as useful as taking BUSAD 101.

[edit] How to make your schedule

[edit] The hard way

Figure out which classes you need to take (you may have to talk to an advisor at this point, but then again, maybe not) and go to the Schedule of Classes. Input a class and it'll give you an ugly amount of information. Those are all the sections that are available. Check out the special notes to see if you can take that section. Write down which section you'd like to take and then repeat with all your other classes. You have to make sure that none of your classes overlap, which can be a real pain in the ass. Make sure you have a backup plan, because there's a great chance you won't get the schedule you want.

[edit] The easy way

Go get yourself a copy of Regman. Figure out which classes you need to take, and input them. Regman does all the hard work of looking for overlapping classes. Regman will give you every possible schedule with the classes you input, just in case. You can tell Regman when you don't want to have any classes, and it'll accomodate that as well. Pretty damn slick, isn't it?

[edit] Okay, now what?

Now that you have an idea of what you want to take, log onto AccessPlus. Click the Student tab, then the Class Registration link, and then click Continue. Here's where you put in your RAN, unless you don't have to, then click Continue and go to the class entry page. Here, get your list of classes and enter them with the section number. After you get all your classes, you'll get something that looks kinda like this, an example from a freshman in Computer Engineering.

[edit] Interpreting your schedule

As an example, Chem 167, Section 10 is a 4 credit class that meets for a lecture on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:10 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. It also meets for a recitation section on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:10 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The following table shows the abbreviations for the days of the week:

Abbreviation Week day
M Monday
T Tuesday
W Wednesday
R Thursday
F Friday

This class meets in Gilman 1002 for lecture and Gilman 1805 for recitation, and it meets for the whole semester (it's a full semester class not a half semester class). The instructor for the lecture is Robert Angelici, and the recitation instructor has not yet been assigned.
