Charles Bessey

Dr. Charles E. Bessey (May 21, 1845, Milton, Ohio – February 25, 1915, Lincoln, Nebraska) was one of Iowa State's original four professors. He taught at the college from 1870 to 1884 and founded the herbarium (now the Ada Hayden Herbarium) in December 1871.
Bessey married Lucy Athearn (1847 – 19??) on December 25, 1873. They had three sons:
- Edward Athearn Bessey (1875 – 1910)
- Ernst Athearn Bessey (1877 – 1957)
- Karl Athearn Bessey (1878 – 19??)
