To help its students get out of Ames upon graduation, the colleges and departments of the University hold a number of career fairs during the year.

[edit] How it works

Companies send recruitment representatives to these events, where they set up tables and wait for students to drop by with resumés and introduce themselves. Then at the end of the day the recruiter goes through the pile of resumés and picks a few people to call for follow-up interviews later in the week.

[edit] Specific career fairs

Below is information on some of the individual career fairs. ISU Career Services makes a full list available with links and dates on their website [1].

[edit] Engineering Career Fair

The Engineering Career Fair is one of the two big, biannual career fairs. It's always held out at Hilton because it attracts quite a crowd--in fall 2004, over 5,000 students attended to talk to representative some 200-odd employers. This school year, the two fair dates are Tuesday, September 20, 2005 and Tuesday, January 31, 2006.

Engineering Career Services is very involved with the event planning, and usually invites corporate recruiters to host seminars and mock interviews in advance of the fair to make sure students are prepared. They also help schedule interview dates and locations, which means that by the beginning of the semester CMS is usually packed with information on who will be at the fair and what positions they're looking to fill.

[edit] Business/LAS Career Day

The business and LAS colleges have combined to present the next-largest career fair. It is also held biannually at Hilton, typically the day after the Engineering Career Fair. This year, the Business/LAS Career Days are September 21, 2005 and February 1, 2006.

[edit] Ag Career Day

The College of Agriculture's career day is held in the middle of the fall semester. Over 100 companies are signed up for this year's event, to be held in the Memorial Union on Tuesday, October 25, 2005.

[edit] Design Career Days

The College of Design shuns what some have called the "meat-market" approach of recruitment used by the rest of the University and opts for a more personal approach. Over the course of two days, recruiters are invited to set up tables in the Design Center itself, and a number of panel discussions and informative lectures are held around the building.

The next Design Career Days will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 2 and 3, 2006.
