The ISU campus is essentially a single area of Ames with a few "satellite" portions of campus (e.g., Research Park, Applied Sciences Complex).

- Central Campus
- The primary area of campus where the bulk of the ISU buildings are located
- Northwest Campus
- North of Molecular Biology Building and west of Stange Road
- Northeast campus
- Same as the Northwest Campus, except east of Stange Road
- Southwest Campus
- South of Lincoln Way and west of Ash Avenue
- Southeast Campus
- Same as the Southwest Campus, except east of Ash Avenue which includes the Veterinary Complex
