A call number is the alphanumeric code displayed on a label typically attached to the lower spine of library books. Sometime the label is found on the cover of a work. A book's call number is unique and identifies that specific work in a library. The call number also identifies a works subject classification and determines its position on the shelf relative to other works of that subject classification.

The ISU Library, like most academic libraries in the U.S., uses the Library of Congress classification. Most school and public libraries in the U.S. use the Dewey Decimal classification.
