Once claimed to be the best known cow in central Iowa, Bud the bull was an oversized steer who resided in the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital from 1983 to 2000, where he passed away due to a possible respiratory failure (was there an autopsy?). He was 19 years old (and 1,800 pounds!).

He was first purchased by James Roth in 1980 for an immunology experiment. Following the injection of a mysterious hormone, he was rendered illegible for sale and was then donated to the College of Veterinary Medicine for student research, where he spent most of his life as a fistulated (or "holey") cow. The fluid extracted from the hole into his stomach was refered to as "Bud Juice", and contained generous amount of helpful microbes and could be transferred into cattle and sheep with digestive problems.

Much beloved by the veterinary community as the unofficial pet and mascot, rubbing Bud's nose before a test for good luck was a widely practiced tradition by the students.
