Former ISU computer science student who, in November 18, 1997, sent off a chain email to his friends claiming that Bill Gates was testing out an email tracing program and would pay $1000 if the email was forwarded 1000 times. This simple joke would become one of the most prolific spam scams in the history of the Internet.

He said after Thanksgiving break, he had "thousands upon thousands" of messages. He never tried to lay claim to the hoax until Wired Magazine tracked him down.
