Bicycle

A bicycle or bike is a two wheeled vehicle that any ISU student should be able to recognize. Since ISU is a pedestrian campus (don't expect much campus parking), bicycles are used by many to get around campus. Some even brave the snow and ice in winter on their bicycles.

Some argue that riding a bicycle will get you around campus faster and some argue that having to lock/unlock the bicycle and ride through heavy foot traffic makes walking just the same. If you have a bicycle then try it for yourself and take it back home if you don't use it.

Police officers around Ames have been seen using bicycles for patroling.

[edit] Legalities

In Ames and Iowa, bicycles are considered vehicles and riders of them must consider themselves on the same level as drivers of cars. Bicyclists must obey all traffic laws and can be ticketed for the same violations as cars.

For example, if at an intersection with a stop light, you ride your bike on a crosswalk when the opposing direction has a green and get hit then you will be cited for failure to yield and will be responsible for the accident. If, however, you are on foot and do the same thing then the car would be cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian (and you go the hospital and, in the spirit of what-has-become the American way, you sue the car driver for lots of money...especially if they are rich).

Some streets (e.g., Hyland Avenue, Lincoln Way east of Ames) have special bicycle lanes so that bicyclists can stay off the sidewalks but not totally disrupt traffic flow.

[edit] Where to buy

[edit] Registration

You can register your bike with ISU and/or Ames. Registration is free and never expires. You can do it in person in Room 27 or 55 of Armory Hall, or you can register online (they may have to mail out the sticker if you do the latter). You can also register at the bike shops. The City of Ames has more information on their website.

[edit] Theft

Bikes do get stolen. Always lock them on racks. Don't lock your bike onto fences, the DPS will take them away (you may be able to get it back after paying some fine). The DPS do look for and take away abandoned bikes, so don't just park and leave them on campus for weeks/months.

Some Kryptonite locks can be easily compromised with a BIC pen, so keep that in mind when buying locks.
