Barton Hall dormitory was originally named South Hall due to is position south of Lyon Hall and Freeman Hall, the only two other dormitories in the area at the time. In 1928, it was renamed Barton Hall in honor of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. Barton Hall currently contains two co-ed houses: Anders House, an honors house that occupies the lower two floors of Barton, and Tappan House, which occupies the upper two floors and is open to all ISU students.

Barton Hall was closed for the 2004-2005 school year because of low enrollment and budget problems within the Department of Residence. Randy Alexander promised residents that a major $1 million renovation of the building would occur during that year, but the renovation was canceled because of the massive budget problems discovered in the aftermath of Alexander's resignation. Instead, a minor renovation of the building over summer 2005 was able to go forward. This renovation included new paint and carpet, new furniture for common areas, an upgraded kitchen area, and newer room furniture taken from Towers. During the 2004-2005 year, Anders House and Tappan House moved to the top two floors of Freeman Hall and existed as Barton House.

Barton House is inhabited by the ghost of Clara Barton. Residents occasionally make sacrifices of NyQuil and Band-aids to Clara. During December, Clara Barton's portrait sports a red nose.
