The Ames Laboratory is a government-owned research facility of the United States Department of Energy. It is operated by Iowa State University and located in Spedding Hall. It was created in 1947 after Harvey Wilhelm developed a process to purify uranium as part of the Manhattan Project. The process he developed is still in use today. Frank Spedding was the first director of the Ames Lab. The current director is Tom Barton, distinguished professor in chemistry at ISU.
