Ames Circle of Arts
From Rofflehaus
Ames Circle of Arts is the name of the sculpture formation in Bandshell Park, which includes a semi-nude woman holding a globe. Bill Culbertson, the artist, originally proposed both clothed and unclothed versions of the figure. Several Ames residents voiced their complaints against the nudity, stating that it would be an embarassment, especially with kids around, and that the artistic merit is secondary because the Bandshell Park is primarily a concert venue, and not an art museum.
The final design has the woman nude with a drape wrapping around parts of her body. The artist had stated that this change in the design was strictly structural, and not a compromising censorship (self-imposed or otherwise) of his artistic vision.
